Discover the timeless art of timber framing with in-person, three day weekend intensive timber framing classes in Aiken County, South Carolina.
This class will teach you the skills necessary to create your own timber frame structure, even if you’ve never sawn a board in your life.
This three day, hands-on class will teach you timber framing techniques with both hand tools and power tools. Tools will be provided – you only need to bring yourself and your favorite pair of work gloves
On the final day, you’ll have the unique opportunity to experience the community of an old-fashioned “barn raising” when you help classmates assemble and raise a timber frame pergola.
Bonus pergola plans are included in the class so you can make your own at home!

A hot, home cooked lunch will be provided each day. Classes run Friday-Sunday and will be held from 9 am to 4 pm.

Meet Your Teacher
Classes will be led by Angel. Angel has attended both Heartwood School of Timber Framing and studied under Japanese-style timber framer Josh Stephens, aka Mr. Chickadee.
Angel will be supported by his wife, Natasha.

Angel has designed and built multiple timber frame structures, including a “she shed” home office that came through Helene unscathed.

What You’ll Learn

Master Mortise & Tenon Joinery:
Learn the classic technique of mortise and tenon joinery, the backbone of traditional timber framing.
You’ll work with both hand tools and power tools to create tight, durable joints that are the hallmark of solid timber frame construction.
Hands-on Woodworking Techniques:
Learn how to timber frame using traditional hand tools, like a chisel and mallet, as well as modern tools, like a circular saw and router.
Raise a Timber Frame:
The third day is raising day! You’ll help your classmates raise a timber frame structure by hand.

Timber Frame Pergola Plans
Plans for a 8×8 timber frame are included in the class so you can build your own timeless pergola or shed at home. The plan is easy to modify for either option.
Add on another bent to make yourself a 16×8 shed!

Frequently Asked Questions
Can women attend?
Yes! Absolutely. Anyone aged 18 or over is welcome to attend.

Do I need woodworking experience?
No, prior woodworking experience is not required. It is helpful, but we’ll walk you through everything you need to know to successfully craft your timber frame model.
Do I have to use power tools?
No. If you don’t feel comfortable using power tools, you’re welcome to make all of your joinery using hand tools.
Do I need to bring my own tools?
No. All tools will be provided. We will also provide hearing and eye protection. You’re welcome to bring your own hearing and eye protection if you’d prefer. The only thing you need to bring is yourself and a pair of work gloves.
Are there refunds?
Tickets are transferable, but not fully refundable. Because we have to secure timbers and tools ahead of time, cancelations will receive a 50% refund. You may also reschedule for a later class date, space permitting.
