Large Dovetail Jig – How to Use
This post is a look at how to use the large tapered dovetail router jig from this Etsy listing.
This router jig allows you to create tapered dovetail mortise and tenon joints. These joints can be used for joists, joining beams, and other 90 degree connections.

This style of large dovetail joint is commonly used to build timber frame pergolas and pavilions. Now you can use the same joinery as the big timber framing companies without a CNC router!

This dovetail tenon jig is designed for use with hand routers.
The tenon jig is adjustable to four different positions. You can create tenons that are 3.5″, 4.5″, 5.5″, or 6.5″ tall. If needed, shim the jig for the a different depth.
Please note that the index piece (the piece you insert into the numbered holes) can be inserted two different ways. This allows you to create half step sizes between the holes. Make sure to use the same setting on both the mortise and tenon jigs.

The tenons are tapered at a 10 degree angle.
The jig is fully supported when screwed into the work piece to prevent the router from tipping over.
The mortise jig creates a pocket matched exactly to the tenon created. Use the scale on the back to match to the tenon.
As mentioned in the video, you may need to plane the end grain of the tenon very slightly to get a perfect fit. A quick pass or two with a small power planer makes this easy.
The mortise and tenon are designed to be “hammer tight.” Use a wooden mallet and/or a wooden block to protect your tenon when seating it.
